The suit turned into a battle exposing a decades-long history of chemical pollution. Haynes has spent most of his career developing his own projects and rarely meets for open directing assignments like this one. The history of the Du Ponts, however, holds similarities to some of the flawed characters Haynes has depicted in previous films like “Far From Heaven, ” “Carol, ” and the Bob Dylan drama “Im Not There. ” Haynes most recently directed the Amazon Studios pic “Wonderstruck. ” He is represented by CAA. After the feel-good delights of Wonderstruck and the searing romantic overtures of Carol, Haynes has boarded a directorial venture that seems entirely impossible to languish in. According to Variety, Haynes will direct Dry Run, a Participant Media project that currently has Mark Ruffalo attached as producer. There are whispers that Ruffalo could also negotiate a deal to star in the movie, although nothing concrete has yet been determined on this front. Mario Correa ( Electoral Dysfunction) is currently in the process of rewriting the films script, working from a first draft by Matthew Carnahan ( House of Lies. Dry Run is based on a harrowing true story, centering on Nathaniel Richs New York Times Magazine article “ The Lawyer Who Became DuPonts Worst Nightmare. ” The film will follow the efforts of corporate defense attorney Robert Bilott to bring an environmental lawsuit against chemical company DuPont. Despite the seemingly paradoxical situation of a corporate lawyer going against the interests of a company aligned with his firm, Bilott was driven by conscience (in Richs feature, Bilott states it was “the right thing to do”) to uncover the truth about a contaminated water supply that first came to his attention after one mans cattle farm was invariably poisoned. Bilott eventually discovered a massive history of chemical pollution involving perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA. Used to manufacture high-performance plastics that are then made into numerous modern everyday devices, improperly disposed sludge laced with the toxic compound risked the health and safety of thousands. A class-action suit was filed on behalf of 70, 000 people against DuPont, through which a court-appointed science panel determined a probable link between multiple health problems — including various cancers, thyroid disease, and ulcerative colitis — and PFOA. When Richs piece was first published in January 2016, its present-day contextual relevance compared to the ongoing Flint water crisis couldnt have been overstated. Nevertheless, problems with drinking water in the United States still persist, and PFOA and its overarching group of man-made chemicals known as PFAS continue to proliferate headlines. Hence, the political significance of Dry Run rings especially true. And I cant think of a better actor to produce and hopefully star in Dry Run than Ruffalo. His activism – environmental and otherwise – has often been clearly stated, particularly on his social media accounts (that is, when he was still regularly using them. Apart from his own personal conviction to shine a light on a story like Bilotts, Ruffalos innate actorly sensibilities match the quiet fire that Dry Run s protagonist would need, too. More than once throughout Richs story, the real Bilott is characterized as “understated” but undeniably driven towards some kind of greater purpose. When studying at the New College of Florida, a liberal arts school, Bilott found a taste for questioning the establishment. In his own words, “Dont take anything at face value. Dont care what other people say. I liked that philosophy. ” His favorite law school course was environmental law due to its real-world applications. Take a look at Ruffalos best roles for a comparable knack for social commentary. Beyond just portraying Bruce Banner in the MCU, and many enchanting love interests in erstwhile romantic comedies of his early days, films like Zodiac and Spotlight are great ensemble pieces that shed light on a common affliction. Zodiac provides Ruffalo the opportunity to portray stark conviction in the face of a seemingly impossible task of catching an enigmatic killer, allowing audiences to watch the situation inevitably take a toll on his character. Spotlight – arguably one of the best films about journalism to come out in recent years – is full of empathy and heroism, even when its protagonists are met with the frustrations of bureaucratic gatekeeping. And Ruffalo, like always, acts the hell out of it all. Part of me is way too excited about the mere prospect of Ruffalo starring in Dry Run, so I should probably write about something thats at least confirmed. With regard to Haynes attachment, the film definitely has a stylistic advantage from the get-go, regardless of who its lead actor turns out to be. Haynes mastery of his signature cinematic craft involves a striking ability to depict nostalgia to a point of utmost saturation. Yet, within these reminiscent frameworks, a subversive narrative is waiting to burst through. His directorial efforts – Poison, Safe, Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, Im Not Here, Carol, and most recently Wonderstruck – share similarities not necessarily in subject matter but in the ways that they use style to facilitate the voices of lesser-seen communities. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, Carol is full of romance. So much so that by the films end, viewers could perhaps relish in the fact that love finds a way against all odds through the throes of violent discrimination. Still, theres a significant amount of unease that rests in Carol s time period. After the eponymous protagonist and her lover share that final longing look, what happens next? What would they — can they — do to maintain the happiness that they deserve? The fact that Carol can simultaneously serve as absolution and disruption is precisely what makes Haynes work so powerful. When we look at his eeriest film — ironically titled Safe — the sense of unknowability is absolutely suffocating. Julianne Moores Carol White slowly but surely degenerates, supposedly due to sensitivities to multiple chemicals. But truthfully, the audience isnt actually privy to exactly whats going on with her. There is a distinct lack of warmth in Safe that is laced throughout the cinematography. The coldness that Moores Carol experiences from health professionals as well as people who supposedly love her generates maximum anxiety and fear in both protagonist and viewer. Haynes could totally bring such warranted antsy pressure to Dry Run. Meanwhile, his penchant for capturing emotional depth (which is further evidenced in Far From Heaven and the miniseries Mildred Pierce) is also necessary in order to personify the desperate compassion rooted in Dry Run ‘s premise. At the risk of getting my hopes up too soon, I will state that Ruffalos sensitive, nuanced acting would genuinely fit perfectly into one of Haynes curated and emotionally-conscious worlds. Nonetheless, their joint efforts in a producorial capacity are already worth celebrating, and a film like Dry Run couldnt be timelier.

Plot synopsis [ edit] Robert Bilott ( Mark Ruffalo) a corporate lawyer from Cincinnati, Ohio working for law firm Taft, Stettinus & Hollister is visited by farmer Wilbur Tennant. Tennant asks that Robert link a number of unexplained deaths in Parkersburg, West Virginia to one of the world's largest corporations, DuPont, and gives Robert a large case of videotapes which Robert puts aside. While Robert is actually a corporate defense lawyer and he helps chemical companies pollute without breaking the law, he still visits the Tennants' farm as a gesture of respect and kindness, especially since his grandmother still lives in Parkersburg. When he reaches the farm, Tennant reveals that over the past couple of years, he has lost over 190 cows to strange medical conditions such as bloated organs, black teeth, and huge tumors. At the farm, Robert witnesses the problem first hand when Tennant is forced to put down a tumor-covered cow. Even though he is a defense lawyer who is on very good terms with executives at DuPont, he broaches the subject with DuPont attorney Phil Donnelly (Victor Garber) who politely tells him he is not aware of the specifics but will help out in any way he can. Robert files a small suit so he can gain information through legal discovery of the chemicals that have been dumped on the site. He does not find anything useful, then realizes it is possible that whatever poisoned Tennant's cattle could be something that is not even regulated by the EPA, and so is not listed by the EPA report that he has inquired into. With Tom Terp's reluctant agreement, Robert forces DuPont to turn over all of its information, resulting in angry words between Phil and Robert. In an attempt to hide the truth, DuPont sends Robert hundreds of boxes, hoping to bury the evidence, but Robert goes through the evidence meticulously and finds numerous references to PFOA, a chemical with no references in any medical textbook. Later, in the middle of the night, Robert's pregnant wife Sarah (Anne Hathaway) finds him tearing the carpet off the floors and going through their pans. He tells her they are being poisoned, and she thinks he has gone mad, until he explains what he has found deep in the DuPont documents: perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA-C8) is a man-made chemical also known as Teflon. It was created for army tanks, but then used by companies in American homes for primarily nonstick pans. DuPont has been running tests of the effect of it for decades, including on animals and on their own employees. Their own studies show that it caused cancer in animals, people, and birth defects in babies of women working on their line – and they never said a thing. They then dumped hundreds of gallons of toxic sludge upriver from Tennant's farm. Even worse, PFOA and similar compounds are forever chemicals, chemicals that do not leave the blood stream and slowly accumulate over time. Teflon is used in everything from nonstick pans to plastics, and it's likely that every American on the planet has PFOA in his/her bloodstream. Tennant, meanwhile, has been shunned by the entire local community for suing their biggest employer. His house is broken into, and he gets sicker. Robert goes to him with the evidence and tells Tennant to take the settlement DuPont is offering, but Tennant refuses, wanting justice and not wanting to stay silent. He tells Robert he and his wife both have cancer. Robert feels guilty, and so while he gets Wilbur Tennant the settlement, he also writes a brief with all the DuPont evidence and sends it to the EPA and Department of Justice, among others. The EPA fines DuPont 16. 5 million. Robert, however, is not satisfied; he realizes that the residents of Parkersburg will feel the effects of DuPont's PFOA for the rest of their lives. He decides to seek medical monitoring for all residents of Parkersburg in one big class-action suit. However, a call from a local resident, the Kigers, reveals that DuPont sent a letter notifying residents of the presence of PFOA, thus starting the statute of limitations and giving any further action only a month to begin. Since PFOA is not regulated, they argue that DuPont is liable because the amount in the water was higher than the one part per billion their internal documents argued to be safe. In court, DuPont claims they did a new study that says that 150 parts per billion is safe. Robert is aghast, and the locals begin protesting DuPont and the story becomes national news. DuPont agrees to settle for 70 million. Legally, they are only required to do medical monitoring if scientists prove that PFOA causes the ailments, so an independent scientific review is set up to study the effects of PFOA. If they find in favor, DuPont will have to pay up. In order to get data for it, the firm tells the locals they can get their settlement money after donating blood, and nearly 70, 000 people donate to the study. Over 7 years pass with no result from the study. Tennant passes away, the Kiger family are harassed locally, and Robert faces extreme financial strain, having worked the entire case on the promise of the settlement and continuing to work on it, having to pay scientific experts. He has taken pay cut upon pay cut at the firm, and things are tense with Sarah. When Tom tells him he needs to take another pay cut, Robert collapses, shaking. At the hospitals, the doctors tell Sarah he had an ischemia, or minor stroke, and that he needs to get on new medication and stop dealing with so much stress. Sarah tells Tom to stop making Robert feel like a failure, since he is doing something for people who needed help. Finally, the scientific review contacts Robert and tells him that PFOA causes multiple cancers and other diseases. At dinner with his family, Robert is informed that DuPont is reneging on the entire agreement. He is angry, saying Tennant told him that there would not be any justice and he did not believe him. So Robert decides to take each defendant's case to DuPont, one at a time. The post-credits information explains that Robert won his first three multi-million dollar settlements against DuPont, and finally DuPont settles the class action for 671 million. But the shooting along Park Avenue, mainly between Haven and Edgewood avenues, is expected to happen the same times — 6 a. m. to 8 p. — on Tuesday, Hamilton Police spokesman, Sgt. When filming does happen, its not clear which if any of the movies stars will be present. SYNOPSIS:
This is the story based on a real person named "Robert Bilott" and inspired by an article titled "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare." Robert Bilott (Mark Ruffalo) is a lawyer who primarily defends chemical corporations until a farmer from his old town of West Virginia asks for help to prove that there are chemicals being dumped in the water that is the cause of large amount of cow deaths. Although unconvinced at first, through excessive research and digging, Robert begins to find horrifying evidence of something much worse than just a deadly chemical to cows, but humans and all creatures alike.
DIRECTION:
If I'm being honest, I don't have much to say in this realm. The direction by Todd Haynes was as technically solid as any other good film. Yes, just "good." The color palette was probably a little too dull even for the subject matter and really the film's strong points really lye in the writing and some strong performances. I feel almost any other director could've done the same job, if not better.
WRITING:
The writing is definitely a step up from the directing. The writing isn't perfect as there are some scenes that almost seemed unnecessary and just had me thinking "get to the story! Now, there is much to be said about how much time and effort it must've been to retrieve all of this information and translate it to script. Yes, it's been done before, ie: Spotlight, Zodiac, etc., but this is quite possibly one of the most important stories to be told today as this is something that is still affecting everyone. TODAY. It is based on the NYTIMES article "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare" by Nathanial Rich, but obviously there was far more research than a 10ish page article.
ACTING:
The acting is definitely where the juice is at. This is where you take your regular beef sandwich and baptize it (In case you're not american enough to know what this means, it means you dump in in the beef juice. Mark Ruffalo gives a similarly excellent performance as he did in Spotlight. WOAH WOAH, I didn't say it was AS good, I said it was SIMILAR. Cool it, Mary. It's expected, but he really makes the film what it is. Anne Hathaway is great, as usual, but her role as the wife wasn't integral to the story. I understand showing he has a life outside of work with kids and a wife and showing the kid's grow older and older gives substance to the prolonged journey Robert is taking, but these were the scenes I felt could've been cut or replaced. Tim Robbins is in this and some other people and some other people. All did well, just kind've interchangeable.
CONCLUSION:
Mr. John "The Sexy and Over-qualified or something Critic Guy" Yanulis, you rated this film a 3.5/5, yet after reading your overly long review it seems like a high rating. What can I say? I like it Ruff and I'm a sucker for investigative films on important and interesting topics. Also, I prefer rating my films on a 1-10 bases, but I'm limited. So really for me this film is like a 6.6/10.

The film shot in Cincinnati is based on a real legal case that, well, The Enquirer has written about many times. We are positive about who is going to win, who is going to lose – and what this revolutionary case meant for big business and environmental safety in this country. But we think we might know something else about this Mark Ruffalo-helmed drama. We believe this might be the most major, major motion picture that's called Cincinnati home in years. Here are our reasons. In three acts: This is a Cincinnati story, set in Cincinnati. We've certainly had films set in the Queen City before. The bad guys in the Bruce Willis-helmed "Marauders" robbed our Downtown banks. The early '90s cult classic. Airborne. features totally rad teens rollerblading all over town. Cincinnati, of course, is the starting point for that Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman Oscar-grabbing road trip in "Rain Man. Director Todd Haynes will return to Cincinnati for "Dark Waters. " In 2014, he helmed "Carol. the romantic drama that earned six Academy Award nominations. That was actually the last time a movie from here earned major award attention, even though it didn't take home any golden men that night. I finally watched the movie for the first time today & the ending to it was unbelievable but it was great to see & watch adam sandler play a great & serious role in his career.
